Big Y Supermarkets: Expansion, Modernization, and Enhanced Product Selection
If Westport is lacking in something, that something is not grocery stores. Whole Foods, Stop and Shop, Trader Joe’s, Fresh Market and now: the Big Y. This family-owned grocery store chain has locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, and it just opened on 1076 Post Rd, filling the space where Barnes and Noble used to be.
Store Offerings and Selection
The first thing you will notice when you walk in is the wide selection. From pizza with house-made crust, to the largest collection of yogurts I have ever seen, Big Y seemed to have it all. The Big Y has rows and rows of produce, and even sells some exotic fruits such as prickly pears, persimmons and mini guavas. I would recommend any item from their bakery or hot bar, and this is a great place to find your favorite snacks and produce, noted Andi Jacobs ’26, Editor-in-Chief.
Here is an overview of some reviewed items available at the new location:
| Product Name | Rating | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Gourmet Chocolate Chip Cookies | 8/10 | Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside; full of semi-sweet chocolate chunks. |
| Sushi | 7.5/10 | Includes spicy tuna rolls and crunchy california rolls from the sushi bar. |
| Hot Bar Soup | 6/10 | Warm and cozy, though flavors vary daily (e.g., broccoli cheddar). |
| Chicken Tenders | 5.5/10 | Good quality chicken, but the outside was not very crispy. |
| Banana Cream Pie | 5/10 | Features light, fluffy whipped cream, though the banana flavor is artificial. |
Modernization and Hispanic Grocery Expansion
Big Y is aiming to make it easier for its customers to get hard-to-find Hispanic groceries. The chain’s remodeled store in West Springfield, Massachusetts, which reopened this week, features an expanded Hispanic grocery section. This section has traditional ingredients and pantry staples from across Latin America including Brazil and the Caribbean. The store also offers tropical fruits and vegetables like plantains and ajicito peppers as well as an expanded selection of roots, sugar cane, chayote, chili and more.
Hispanic products are also available across store departments, including:
- Empanadas, quesadillas and burrito bowls in the ready-to-eat section.
- Specialty meats in the butcher shop.
- Octopus and a variety of fish among frozen seafood options.
- Tres leches cake in the bakery.
“We had a ton of demand for these types of products. People were having trouble finding them in the area and started requesting them,” Sean Thompson, the store director, said in the announcement.
Strategic Growth and Infrastructure Updates
Big Y said Thursday that the West Springfield store renovations are part of a broader strategy to modernize the company’s retail stores to create a more enjoyable shopping experience for both customers and associates. Other changes to the location include new décor with a farmer’s market style open-air entrance, an expanded grab-and-go section with an added self-serve pizza section, and a renovated meat and seafood department. The location also has new energy-efficient refrigerated cases, upgraded flooring and a modernized exterior.
Future Outlook
Last week, Big Y announced the opening of its first of three stores opening in Connecticut this year. Big Y said it is planning to open stores in Middletown and Westport, Connecticut, this year as well as one in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Once all of these stores are open, Big Y will have a total of 77 supermarkets.
