Sustainable Practices and Bold Aesthetics: The Evolution of Modern Korean Fashion

Korean designers gathered at the iconic Zaha Hadid–designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul for the 2025 fall-winter Seoul Fashion Week. The event showcased collections that blend sustainable practices, innovation and heritage with bold contemporary aesthetics, underscoring the evolving identity of K-fashion on the global stage. Designers are pushing boundaries with sustainable practices and fresh inspiration while calling for greater diversity.

The Rise of Sustainable and Ethical Brands

Danha is not only a brand that is focused on creating a modern version of traditional Korean clothing, it is also a sustainable and ethical fashion brand – not something that is common in the Korean fashion industry. Named after the designer Danha, the brand has always been about two things – celebrating traditional garment heritage in Korea, and being environmentally responsible. The brand describes itself as “sustainable ethical ‘slow fashion’ rather than ‘fast fashion’ that causes global warming, [and] will contribute to improving the world’s environmental problems”.

Another prominent figure in this movement is Kim Chae-won, the founder and CEO of Popsiz, a Seoul-based sustainable clothing brand that she launched in 2020. Her brand is getting major recognition after being worn by several major K-pop artists such as Twice and Red Velvet. Kim Chae-won notes that “after gaining knowledge about sustainable fashion, I was triggered to spread it for the sake of future generations.”

Innovative Materials and Production Methods

These brands utilize a variety of eco-friendly materials and unique production techniques to reduce their environmental footprint:

  • Organic Fabrics: Danha uses organic cotton that complies with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), grown in a three-year process with no chemical fertilizers.
  • Upcycling: Popsiz sells products such as upcycled vintage denim and graphic printed indigo rather than regular denim to reduce water use.
  • Recycled Materials: Garments are created out of eco-fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles and dead stock fabric.
  • Waste Reduction: Using the traditional flat-cut method of Korean garment design, Danha actively reduces fabric waste.

Comparison of Sustainable Brand Practices

Brand Core Materials Key Sustainability Features
Danha Organic cotton, recycled plastic bottles, eco-friendly tweed. Flat-cut method, upcycled fabric offcuts, biodegradable packaging.
Popsiz Upcycled vintage denim, natural dyes, dead stock fabric. Water use reduction, recycled plastics, collegiate workshop environment.
Daily Mirror Raw denim, tweed, and sleek linen-nylon blends. Reversed tailoring techniques, functional high-fashion sensibility.

K-pop Influence and Global Recognition

The global success of K-pop has played a vital role in promoting these sustainable labels. For instance, the girl group BlackPink appeared in fabulous traditional Hanbok-with-a-twist garments from Danha. I recognised the fabrics, prints and decorative details from all those Kdramas we all watch, but teamed with boots, short-shorts and minis, this was definitely not something Queen Seondeok would wear! Designer Danha discusses how her clothes ended up on BlackPink, noting the brand's aesthetic fits neatly into the growing #cottagecore movement.

Similarly, Kim Chae-won of Popsiz receives messages from audiences who learn about sustainable fashion from K-pop stars. She says, “Fortunately, a lot of artists prefer to wear our upcycled items over other pieces, which certainly raised awareness of sustainable fashion to their Asian fans and other artists.” This level of awareness helps young consumers get in touch with sustainable fashion, mostly young people like teenagers to those in their early 20s.

Diversity and Inclusivity in Design

From the customers’ perspective, some modern Korean brands are becoming remarkably inclusive. Danha, for example, is quite inclusive compared to other brands which historically have had issues with sizing. The brand’s ‘free size’ ranges from Korean sizes 44 to 66 (XS to M on the international size chart), and the brand will also customise garments to order in any size you like. This shift reflects a broader trend seen at Seoul Fashion Week, where designers are narrating symbolic journeys of life through their collections, emphasizing that fashion should require balance and courage to keep moving upward.
