HP Digital Transformation: Reinventing Printing and E-commerce Supply Chains
HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) is a global technology leader redefining the Future of Work. Operating in more than 180 countries, HP delivers innovative and AI-powered devices, software, services and subscriptions that drive business growth and professional fulfillment. To mark the beginning of HP’s next chapter, the company is leading transformation in the print industry by developing solutions like HP Piazza.
HP Piazza: Cloud-Based Services for Publishing
HP Piazza is a pioneering set of independent and interlocking cloud-based services that enable publishers to make book manufacturing and distribution more time- and cost-efficient. Now, publishers can build a virtual warehouse for the management, automation, distribution, print, and direct fulfillment of book orders, while holding zero inventory. With HP Piazza, you can fully automate multiple stages of your workflow, from content ingestion through to inventory and order management.
Adding Titles to the Piazza Content Repository is done by adding Product Specifications, Title Metadata and Assets by Title. Required information for adding a new Title includes:
- Title Name and Author
- ISBN and Source Product ID
- Shipping and Product Specification
Piazza will check Title Specifications and Pre-flight Assets (Covers and Text) for digital print optimization prior to “publishing” a Title so it is ready to order. Furthermore, the Piazza Order Management view allows Publishers an “at a glance” view of Order Status in Production. As noted by HP leadership, moving from a print-to-sell model to a sold-to-print one allows titles to be always available and “never out of print.”
E-commerce Growth and Supply Chain Management
Historically, HP wanted to leverage the power of the internet to provide customers with easy access to its products and services. It launched an online store in 1998 that experienced over 500% annual revenue growth. FedEx helped HP establish this new e-commerce sales channel by conducting needs assessments, designing an end-to-end supply chain solution, and managing order fulfillment, inventory, and reverse logistics.
The following table summarizes the impact of these supply chain initiatives:
| Metric | Performance Improvement |
|---|---|
| Annual Revenue Growth | Over 500% |
| Return Times | Reduced by 80% |
| Operational Costs | Reduced by 70% |
This enabled HP to quickly launch its online outlet store and increase its customer relationships and sales. Today, HP continues to reinvent its portfolio, featuring AI PCs, HP Z Workstations, and PageWide Web Presses for corrugated packaging and commercial printing.
