The future of drone and robot delivery: Opportunities and challenges
Last-mile delivery is undergoing perhaps the biggest transformation in its history, especially with robots and drones emerging as potential game-changers in the rapidly evolving segment. Gone are the days of spending hours in the local mall to purchase an item, be it garments, groceries, medicines, food items, household staples, or a last-minute birthday gift! Today, shoppers can skip through hundreds of available products, compare prices, place an order, and have their purchases delivered to their doorstep from the comfort of their homes.
The unprecedented growth in e-commerce over recent years has driven a parallel shift in the way we trade and operate businesses. According to the online research platform Statista, the global e-commerce market size is forecasted to hit $6.35 trillion by 2027, at a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.51% between 2023 and 2027. The emergence of new store models and delivery options, from same-day delivery to 15-minute express delivery, called for faster, more efficient, and cost-effective delivery solutions.
Accelerated Progress in Autonomous Delivery Robots
As one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the world, the Middle East has been at the forefront of technological innovation. The past few months saw major players in the last-mile domain proactively conducting trials of delivery robots, especially in the UAE, in line with the Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategy objectives to automate 25% of all trips in Dubai by 2030.
FedEx Roxo™ and Talabots Case Studies
In June 2022, the global provider of express logistics solutions, FedEx Express, launched the first trials of its Roxo™ SameDay Bot®. The battery-powered 157-centimetres tall robot followed an optimised route along footpaths and roadsides to make autonomous same-day deliveries to homes and businesses across Dubai’s Silicon Oasis district. The robot uses laser detection and ranging sensors (LiDAR), multiple cameras, and radar capabilities paired with machine-learning algorithms to avoid obstacles and navigate a safe path.
In February, seven of Talabat’s first autonomous food delivery robots, “Talabots,” were deployed to serve nearly 300 homes across the same district. These fully-autonomous delivery robots are fitted with radar and lidar operating systems to navigate safely around vehicles and road obstacles.
The Rise of Drone Delivery Solutions
The adoption of drone delivery solutions has been on the rise, with leading retailers and e-commerce platforms successfully trialling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to fulfil orders. In 2022, the e-commerce major, Amazon announced plans to launch its new drone delivery service, Prime Air, which will allow customers to receive their shipments in less than half an hour after the order is placed. It is estimated that in 2025, there will be over three times more drones sold than in 2020, while in 2023 the drone delivery market will be worth around 1.68 billion US dollars.
Future Technology Trends to Look Out For
Technology is constantly driving change in every industry, and logistics is no exception. Here are several key trends identified in the market:
- Shipping by Autonomous Cars: The global autonomous vehicles market is estimated to reach 196.2 billion US dollars by 2029. Companies such as Amazon, Tesla, and Gatik are testing various vehicles including self-driving minibuses and trucks.
- Real-time Tracking of Couriers: The global navigation satellite system market size will grow to 324 billion in 2029, providing route optimization options that save fuel and increase efficiency.
- Monitoring the Delivery Directly: Track and Trace technology allows recipients to track their cargo in real-time, even if it’s currently on its way across the ocean.
- Information On Parcel Condition: Innovative solutions will let users monitor whether a parcel was shaken, crushed, or exposed to specific temperatures during its journey.
